This wine is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. The vines average 40 years of age, though some parcels date to 1925.
The Montirius domaine is in the south of the Vacqueyras appellation and has been under the ownership of the Saurel family for 5 generations. In 1996, they fully converted the vineyard to biodynamic methods and released their first biodynamic wine in 1999.
Beautiful ruby red with a touch of copper in the glass. Classic Rhône nose of strawberry, kirsch, violets and pepper. On the palate, juicy dark cherries, blackberry and black currant with black pepper, spice, and licorice — with some graphite, tar and mineral notes. Silky, ripe tannins, nice acidity and a pure, smooth finish.
The wine is aged in concrete vats and never sees wood. Robert Parker called this the finest cuvee he has tasted from this producer and a pure, vibrant expression of Vacqueyras. Production is 70,000 bottles. The vineyard suggests consuming this wine over the next 7-8 years. 14% alcohol.
This wine could compete with many a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at 2 times the price. At less than $20 a bottle, this is a great wine and a tremendous value. Strongly recommended.
