This week’s in the kitchen with on design*sponge featured our wonderful friend Kristina (from Three Layer Cake), her recipe for Roman-Style artichokes and her beautiful photography. I selected the Mas de Bressades Rosé 2007 to pair with the artichokes. Mas des Bressades is considered by many as one of the top estates in Costières de [...]

The wine is a very light, pale straw color. Grapefruit, limestone, white flowers, salt water, cut grass and some damp basement characteristics on the nose. On the palate, key lime pie, quince, citrus and wet stone — with lemon rind and jalapeno components. Solid underlying minerality, very crisp with razor-sharp, mouth-tingling acidity. I have seen [...]

This is a blend of 90% old-vine Grenache, 8% Syrah and 2% Mourvèdre. It is a Côtes du Rhône, but the vineyard is located very close to Château Rayas and Château Beaucastel. The “Unique” denotes a North Berkeley barrel selection. Beautiful dark ruby in color. Reticent black cherries with violets, some pepper and earthiness on [...]

McPrice Myers began his career working for specialty food retailers and grocery stores, giving him the opportunity to taste a lot of wine. In wine he found a passion and started dreaming of the day when he would make his own wine. He started working harvests in Paso Robles, learning the trade and making the [...]

This wine is a blend of 84% petite sirah and 16% zinfandel from the Lytton Estate. The blend’s zinfandel is from hundred-year-old vines and the petite from younger wines. This was the first petite sirah table table wine produced from the estate, producing 38 barrels in 2002. Stunning black purple in color with serious legs [...]

This is 100 percent mourvedre from Bonny Doon Vineyard. I worked at Bonny Doon during my last year and a half of college. Old Telegram and Le Sophiste were the first wines I started to stockpile in the late 1980s. I depleted all of my reserves a few years back. I had a magnum of [...]

Beautiful golden straw in color. Very aromatic with pronounced notes of apricot, apple and peach. On the palate, peaches, pear and stone fruit with a touch of hay and honey. Fleshy, nice creaminess and great viscosity. This is a sec, or dry wine, but it seems closer to off dry. Really a lovely wine, that [...]

On my last visit to Wisconsin, I went out to see the Saxon Creamery. The creamery is located in Cleveland, Wisconsin. It was started by the Klessig and Heimerl families, who brought in Neville McNaughton, Pat Knowles and Dan Strongin as consultants. Not only do I love cheese, but I grew up in Cleveland and [...]

This wine is produced by Garretson Wine Company. Garetson was founded by Mat Garretson. Mat moved to the Paso Robles area from Atlanta in 1993 and started the GWC in 1997. He had previously founded the Viognier Guild in 1991, which evolved into the Hospice du Rhône. Some have credited Garretson as The Man Behind [...]

The Phone Call

I have been looking for a certain syrah — a syrah that the winemaker contends is the best syrah he has ever made. I have enjoyed his wines for many years and I really wanted a couple of bottles if he says it is the best he ever put in a bottle. It turned out [...]

Phillips Hill produces limited production Pinot Noirs from Anderson Valley & Comptche in Mendocino County, California. I have been excited to open this bottle for quite a while given that their wines have been getting quite a bit of attention. The Toulouse pinot is beautiful, dark cherry in color — though I can easily see [...]

You might be surprised to find me writing about beer. It certainly wasn’t my intention when I started this blog. But I poured a glass of this beer after arriving home after a long walk this evening, and felt compelled to write about it given that I enjoyed the beer as much as my walk. [...]
