Located in the very heart of Gascony in southwestern France, Madiran A.O.C. produces intensely flavorful reds — but is probably better known for producing Armagnac and densely flavorful white wines like Jurançon. The wines of Madiran are traditionally made from the powerful Tannat grape and are often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Concentrated black fruit flavors and big tannins are hallmarks of the wines.
A blend of 60% Tannat, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is a dark and inky red in color. Some plum and black cherry on the nose, but a little flat. On the palate it is very well-balanced (if a bit hollow) — strong tannins but also fruity with some plum, blueberry, and dark currant and some black olive. Powerful, yet quite approachable — this is a very good value at $10-12 a bottle.
Excellent article and top site.
I wish that I could visit this area and taste the wine for myself.
However I have to content myself thousands of miles away here in Aussie with a bottle of the local.
You just can’t beat a good French drop.
Cheers.
I have visited this site on many an occasion now but this post is the 1st one that I have ever commented on.
Congratulations on such a fine article and site I have found it very helpful and informative – I only wish that there were more out there like this one.
I never leave empty handed, sometimes I may even be a little disappointed that I may not agree with a post or reply that has been made. But hey! that is life and if every one agreed on the same thing what a boring old world we would live in.
Keep up the good work and cheers.
