So I have decided to expand beyond just writing about wine and include food as part of the content of this blog. Wine is often better enjoyed with food and hope that pairing will translate to print as well.
Thomas Keller’s idea for Ad Hoc was simple – open a temporary restaurant that would be open 5 days a week and offer a 4 course family style menu that changed each day, accompanied by a small, accessible wine list. All served in a casual setting reminiscent of home.
Response to ad hoc was so positive, they decided to make it a permanent fixture and they are now serving dinner 7 nights a week.
This was the best meal of my last trip to California. The menu on that wonderful evening included:
- Heirloom Tomato with Avocado Salad (the best course of the meal)
- Veal Scallopini with Spinach and Golden Raisins
- Cheese Course with Figs and Honey
- Mascarpone Mousse with Fresh Berries
Outstanding meal — very memorable. The service was very friendly and attentive. Loved this place and would eat here again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again……Must return. Strongly recommended.
The only potential issue is that you don’t like something on the meu on the evening you eat at ad hoc. I must confess that I usually don’t eat veal, and hadn’t had veal in years — so my initial reaction was not complete enthusiasm, but it was delicious — stunning — and I can report that I have not had veal since my meal at ad hoc.
